Choir News from 8/20

Wow, what a fast and furious first week!  Thank you to everyone who showed up for their voice hearing time and the Kick-Off Meeting on Monday night.  It was wonderful to meet some of you and once again see so many familiar faces.  We are so looking forward to getting things going in full swing next week.

Family Potluck Picnic

Just a reminder, this Saturday, August 24th, is our totally optional but totally fun Family Potluck Picnic.  If you signed up to bring something on Saturday just remember to bring individually wrapped finger foods for at least 12 people (i.e. coke cans instead of 2-liters, sandwich bagged sandwiches, etc.).  We will have a few ice chests available to store drinks in until supper time but there will be no cups or eating utensils provided.  And, if you didn't sign up but would still like to come we'd love to have you!  Just look below to see where there is a need (I will keep this list updated) and e-mail me what you would like to bring.  Here's our current sign-up list:

6:00 p.m.  Bella Voce and Illuminati--Swim Time; 5th and Under--Volleyball and Relay Races

Remember, this is meant to be a family affair so please do not drop off your students or let them attend this event alone.  Thanks!  Hope to see you there!

9:00 to 10:00 a.m.  Principio and Music Experience
10:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Bella Voce
10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Illuminati
12:15 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Bravo! (this week includes a parent meeting--see below)

All rehearsals should be in the same room that you had your voice hearing.

If you are listed above, please plan on staying for rehearsal next week from 12:15-1:00 p.m.  I highly encourage you bringing a snack to enjoy during the 15 minute break between choirs.  Our rehearsals will take place in the Principio/Illuminati rehearsal room.

Also, parents, there will be a short parent/student meeting at 12:45 p.m. to explain a few logistics and get you set for the new year.  Look forward to seeing you then!

Used Uniform Sales

We still have several used uniforms for sale should you be interested.  We will not be ordering new uniforms until after September 3rd so if you see a size you might be interested in, let Kathy Gossen know between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday to receive the opportunity to try it on.  All  used uniforms will be returned to the owner if not sold by September 3rd.

Extra T-Shirt Sales

Extra T-shirts and Hoodies will remain on sale through September 3rd.  If you are interested in purchasing one of these, you may obtain a shirt order form at the information table.  T-shirts are $10 and Hoodies are $20.

Membership Dues

For those paying monthly or needing to pay for their uniforms, an online payment option has been added to the right side bar of our website for your convenience.  Please feel free to take advantage of this opportunity or to come in to see Trudie Melson in person from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. any Tuesday.  For those joining between now and September 3rd, the semesterly option will still be available online on our enrollment page.  Also, just so you are aware, late fees will not be implemented until after September 3rd.

90/60 Update

Just want to give you an 90/60 update--we are getting closer to our 90/60 goal for this year.  We now have 87 students enrolled from 54 families!  That's a fabulous turnout after only one week!  To give you an idea of how good that is--last year we averaged approximately 79 students throughout the year with a total involvement of 92 different students over the course of the year.  So we are doing great!  We have a few more who may be joining us in the next week or two so keep your eyes pealed.  We just may make it yet!

Homework

I have been asked by more than one parent whether or not choir students should have homework to do and the answer for the most part is no.  Occasionally they may be asked to memorize some lyrics or review their part a couple of times but that is about it.  If you are looking for additional ways to provide some musical reinforcement throughout the week I highly recommend letting them play some of these online music games (especially found in the aural training, composition, notation, symbols and vocabulary sections) for fun or listening to some quality choral recordings such as some All-State Children's Choruses or All-States Mixed Choruses on YouTube.  This will give a great choral model to follow and will also expose them to a variety of quality choral literature in the process.
