Orientation for 2017-2018

Hi,

If you have not met me in person, my name is Jacque Hocking and I am the new Executive Director of the Central Oklahoma Homeschool Choirs. I am excited about the opportunity to work with you, the board, the choral directors, and the students. I believe God opened this position for me to assist the Central Oklahoma Homeschool Choirs to continue fulfilling a vision that was started 20+ years ago. Your children becoming fine musicians is in the hands of our talented, experienced, and loving choral directors is our first goal. Their heart for God and your children is so evident in all they do. It has been a pleasure watching them prepare for this coming school year. By providing the students with opportunities to sing in the greater Oklahoma City area we satisfy our commitment as a non-profit organization and most importantly our dedication to the mission God has given each of us to share His love.

We have made an adjustment to our schedule and I wanted to get the information to you as quickly as possible.

The decision has been made to have to one orientation this year. It will be on Wednesday, August 23 from 10:00am - 11:30am in the sanctuary at Baptist Temple, which is located at NW 30th & Villa in OKC.  There were a number of situations that perpetuated this change. A few of them were:

1) Our cost for using the churches has risen and this is one way we can cut down on cost (i.e. not needing to pay three churches for orientation days) and I
did not want to come to you and ask for more tuition to cover the increases.
2) We are competing with the eclipse. Many families want to see this unique event.
3) The need for more opportunities for the students from the three locations to bond. If you have participated in a choir, you know the difference a bond can
          make in performances.
4) It has been noted that orientation is not well attended and we want to make the time valuable to you.

On Wednesday, August 23 before and after our meeting, Laura Stoabs and two board members will be accepting tuition payments. The first part of the orientation will be introductions of the choral directors, the board, and Laura Stoabs, our CFO. During the second part of the orientation, the students will go with the choral directors to their rooms for a time of fun, music, and fellowship while the parents will stay in the sanctuary for more information concerning changes in drop off and pick up, clarification about uniforms, and a question/answer time.

The following week, to make the first day of rehearsals run smoothly, there will be a board member at each location.

This year is going to be a time of change and growth. We are developing a permanent branding of the organization, pursuing a grant from Hobby Lobby (Please pray that God would grant us favor with the committee that will read our proposal.), updating the website, and making decisions about possibly expanding our locations in the future. We ask that you pray for us and we will pray for you.

If you have any questions about anything in this email, please contact my by email, text, or phone. My number is 405.919-3776.

Thank you for this opportunity to serve,

Jacque

Oklahoma Hello! from Jacque Hocking, the new Executive Director

Hi,

Now that we have a week behind us after the wonderful spring concerts, I am writing to mostly say hello and to let you know I am committed to you, your children and this organization. I am so excited to begin this journey with you. Music has been and continues to be an enormous part of my life; from standing beside the piano and singing with my grandmother to singing "I Love You a Bushel and a Peck" to my grandchildren. Whether one develops into a professional musician or just enjoys the joy, peace, and comfort music brings, the gift of music should be embraced.

I am determined to keep the Central Oklahoma Homeschool Choirs a vital part of our state. I am also excited about the growth of our group. Your family's part in this organization is what keeps us going. I want to hear your thoughts and ideas and will share them with the choral directors and board. I will strive to make this experience one you and your children will cherish.

Currently, I am in the thick of the 'learning curve' and appreciate your patience as I sort out and make the rigors of this position a part of my everyday life. The plans for fall are well underway and the choral directors and the board will be meeting soon to continue our work, which will make the 2017-2018 season successful.

May God richly bless you and your family this summer and keep you safe in the palm of His hand.

Sincerely,

Jacque

Homeschool Convention Booth Volunteers Needed

Each year OCHEC puts on the largest Homeschool Convention in the state of Oklahoma and the COHC has a booth along with hundreds of other organizations.  This is the event where we connect with most of our potential new members for the upcoming year and we can't keep our booth manned without volunteers.  This year the OCHEC Convention is set for Friday and Saturday May 5th & 6th and will be held at the Cox Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City.  Our booth will be 'open' from 9am - 5:30pm on Friday and 9am -4:30pm on Saturday.  Consider signing up with a friend and working the booth hour(s) together.  Share your story and your students experience within the COHC with interested families.

You do not need to purchase a ticket for the OCHEC Convention in order to 'volunteer' at a booth.  However, you will not be able to enter earlier or stay later than your shift without a ticket.  Those volunteering will receive a "Vendor Badge" identifying them as helping with our booth and it is valid during your shift with the COHC booth.  The "Vendor Badge" will be passed from one volunteer to the next throughout the day.

Sign up for your time slot(s) by copying/ pasting the following link into your browser.

Marching into April

Success!  The Solo & Ensemble Contest this past Saturday was a success and so much of the smoothness of the day was due to the 30 parent volunteers we had in a 3 hour time frame.  WOW!  THANK YOU PARENTS!   You allowed the 6 Choral Directors to do what we love… lead, conduct (13 ensembles!), and encourage your students as they performed.

The Board of Directors went through the interview process last week in order to hire the next Executive Director for the COHC.  It was clear to all around the table (Board Members and Choral Directors) who needed to come join the COHC team.  On behalf of the Central Oklahoma Homeschool Choirs, we’d like to welcome Mrs. Jacque Hocking as the next Executive Director (effective mid-May 2017) of the COHC.  Mrs. Hocking will be popping into rehearsals, Festivals, and Expos, between now and our Spring Concert in order to meet COHC students and parents.  You will learn more about her in the coming weeks and she will be formally introduced to the COHC at our Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 9th.

Carnegie Hall News:  We have one more COHC student headed to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall.  Congrats to Alexi Hufstedler who auditioned and was selected to perform in the Carnegie Hall Middle School Honors Choir this coming June.  She will be rehearsing 8 hours days in NYC with clinician Greg Gilpin before performing at the famed concert hall.

Coming Up…
April 1st:  Heartland Music Festival Payments Due! An additional email was sent Wednesday morning with Festival information.  Remember the COHC address has been changed to:

Solo & Ensemble Volunteers NEEDED / April Calendar

In 48 hours the COHC will host the Oklahoma Homeschool Solo & Ensemble Contest.  Over 120 students from around the metro will be performing from 10am - 12pm at First Baptist Church - Edmond (1300 E 33rd Street- Edmond).  Thank you in advance to those of you who have signed up to help in various ways during that morning time.
We still have 22 vacant time slots to help with:
  • Registration:  Checking in students as they arrive.
  • Green Room:  Keeping goodies (volunteered by parents) on trays and the room inviting for our guest Adjudicators, guest Clinicians,  Accompanists, & Choral Directors
  • Room Monitor:  Sitting outside Adjudication room and assisting the Adjudicator by sending in soloist or ensembles at the appointed times indicated by the schedule…which will be posted and provided.
  • Runners: Need extra “steps” on your FitBit?  Parents will bring the completed adjudication sheets + music from the Adjudication rooms (upstairs) down to the “Awards” area in the Foyer.  Lots of steps and stairs during a 30 minute shift!
  • Adjudication Sheets/Awards: “Rewarding” volunteer spot (pun intended) for any parent who enjoys giving handing out awards for those who receive a “Superior” rating and adjudication sheets + returning music for all soloists and ensembles.  And…no walking involved because the “Runners” will bring everything you need to you!
Sign up HERE  to volunteer.  Thank you!

Heartland Music Festival Payments:  ALL Illuminati & Bella Voce students are automatically registered for this multi-state choral competition.  Payment is due by April 1st. Parents if you have not mailed in your payment, you can BRING your Heartland Music Festival payment on Saturday to the Solo & Ensemble festival between 9am and 11am.  Laura Stoabs will be at the Registration Table to receive any payments.
