Why the Heartland Festival?

Next week, Illuminati and Bella Voce students will be receiving a registration letter with all the details about this year's Heartland Festival.  But first, we will answer a very important question that has been asked:

Why do we participate in the Heartland Festival, and why is it a required event for our students?

A choir contest:
1.    Provides an opportunity for students to receive constructive comments from judges.
2.    Develops closer connections within the group.
3.    Gives choral directors ideas on how to improve the group's musical abilities.
4.    Gives the group an opportunity to see how they compare with other choirs from around the state/country.
5.    Raises the standard of excellence.
6.    Provides a social outlet for students.
7.    Creates a positive memorable childhood experience with their friends and teachers.

The Heartland Music Festival is a national choral contest that is in our own backyard.  Choirs from all over Oklahoma and surrounding states participate in this event either in Branson or OKC.  By participating in the Frontier City sponsored location, we see how we compare as a choir with other similar choirs without leaving our own city.  And, since we cannot participate in OSSAA sanctioned choral contests, this gives our students that choral contest experience.

As Pam Matlick says, "At rehearsal last week as we were discussing Heartland I heard students talk about how much fun it was. I thought 'they will look back at this experience when they become adults and treasure the memories as I did with my musical organizations experiences.'"

So why is it a required event?

That is like asking, "why is playing a basketball game a required event if you are on a basketball team?"  A team is only a team if it has all its players.  The same applies to a choir.  Choral directors assign parts so that harmonies are balanced and voices blend.  If a student is not there, it affects the group’s performance, can potentially lower their choral score, and undermines the group's choral confidence.

So, be looking for a letter coming home with your Bella Voce and/or Illuminati student this week with all the details about Heartland Festival!  It's going to be GREAT!

And We're Off!

Registration for the Spring semester closes Thursday, January 18th!  That means you have one more week to invite your friends to try out the choirs before they join.  Remember, if you bring a friend to rehearsal, and they join this semester, both your friend and you will be entered to win one of 3 $20 Amazon gift cards!  One Amazon gift card will be given out at EACH location so invite your friends!

If you ordered a DVD of the Christmas concert and did not have an opportunity to pick it up last week, please see your designated board member at your rehearsal this week:

  • Edmond--Susan Hufstedler and Karen Serna
  • OKC--Janelle Nation
  • Norman--Angie Laubach

Note: A few extra DVDs are available.  Please check with your board member about the cost and availability.

New members, we are so glad to have you join the choirs this semester.  If you did not turn in your medical release form last week, please give your form to your choral director this week.  Also, don't forget to sign up for the remind me texts if you have not already.

Thursday night the board met to discuss events for the semester, and they have one exciting addition you'll want to put on your calendar.  On Monday, March 12, we are going to have a Jo's Famous Pizza night.  Between, 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.* plan to eat at Jo's (900 S. Kelly Ave., Edmond), hang out with your friends and family, and enjoy some good pizza in the process.  In return, Jo's will donate 20% of your purchase to the choirs!  Start spreading the word now!  We hope to pack the place!

*Note:  There will be a box for people to place their receipt to support the choirs at Jo's Famous Pizza the entire day.  This is just a suggested time so that choir members can also socialize with each other in the process.  That said, feel free to come eat at Jo's anytime on March 12th!

Still have questions about billing?  You can contact Laura Stoab at and she will be glad to help you!

We will be in NEW classrooms beginning this week.  Parents, please drop your students off at the south entrance of First Baptist Church.  This is the NEWLY constructed entrance on the far side of the church.  When you walk into the church from the south entrance, restrooms and the Bella Voce/Principio (Room 106A) rehearsal room will be on the right and the Illuminati/Music Experience rooms (Room 108A&B) will be on the left.  These are beautiful and large rooms that we are honored to be among the first to use.  If you have any questions or get lost, just call Kathy at 405-833-6427.

See you next week!

Choir Starts Back NEXT WEEK!

Are you ready to get back to a routine?  We are!  The choral directors and board are so excited about what is in store this semester and can't wait to get going.  A few housekeeping items as we get started.

Rehearsal schedules and locations are the same as last semester.  If you need an address or rehearsal time, please check our website.  Edmond students--after this week, we will be meeting in NEW classrooms.  The directors will be giving a tour of the new rooms during this first rehearsal so you know exactly where to go beginning January 17th.

This week (January 8th and 10th) is BRING A FRIEND DAY!  Know someone interested in joining the choir who would like to try it out first?  Bring them to your rehearsal on Monday (1/8) or Wednesday (1/10).  If you bring a friend to rehearsal, and they join this semester, both your friend and you will be entered to win one of 3 $20 Amazon gift cards!  One Amazon gift card will be given out at EACH location so invite your friends!  This semester is going to be totally worth it!

Whether you are a new or returning member, please download the new calendar for the Spring semester as several dates have been changed/added since the fall.

Have you signed up to receive our texts?  If not, go here to sign up.  This is one text list you don't want to miss as we only use this to send out last minute reminders and weather cancellations.

Our CFO, Laura Stoabs, will be at each site this week for your convenience.  If you have any financial questions, this is a great time to ask Laura in person.  New members, check in with Laura to confirm your payment plan and fill out a medical release form.  Her schedule will be as follows:

Monday, January 8th in OKC
2:30-3:30 p.m.

Wednesday, January 10th in Norman
9:45-10:30 am.

Wednesday, January 10th in Edmond
12:30 pm-3:30 pm

As always, if you ever have financial questions about the choirs you can contact Laura at

In the event of severe weather, we will send out a remind text and post our cancellation on the website.  A good rule of thumb?  If the school district in which your rehearsal takes place cancels school, we most likely will cancel our rehearsal too.

See you at rehearsals this week!  Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Dear COHC families,

The COHC Board of Directors hopes you had a restful break and are ready for an exciting spring semester!

During the break, the Board was busy at work. We are pleased to welcome Kathy Gossen as Interim Executive Director of COHC. Kathy has faithfully served COHC for many years, both as a past executive director and as a chorale director. Her leadership this semester will be a huge blessing.

The Board gives a warm thank you to Jacque Hocking for all of her hard work and vision. We wish her well on her future endeavors.

Finally, the Board is accepting applications for a permanent executive director for the 2018/2019 school year. If you know an individual who has a heart for Christ, children and ministry with a music leadership background, we would love to meet them. Any questions about the the position may be sent to Kathy Gossen at

Please know that the COHC Board is always open for questions, concerns, and praise reports. Please feel free to contact your local Board member if there is anything you would like to discuss. A list of current Board members may be found at

We look forward to a terrific year!!
