What is the Solo and Ensemble Contest?

It is an event organized by Central Oklahoma Homeschool Choirs that is open to all Oklahoma students ages 8 to 18.  The goal of the Oklahoma Homeschool Solo and Ensemble Contest is to provide an opportunity for students of any educational background to receive personal feedback via a highly-qualified solo and ensemble adjudicator.

Participating in a Solo & Ensemble Festival is fully supported by statements within the COHC mission:

“to provide an excellent choral music education”
Working with smaller ensembles (2-12 students) allows choral teachers to identify students who need extra help in reading music and provides time for extended focused vocal coaching with smaller numbers.

“promote the development of personal character and teamwork through performance preparation”
Within any given curriculum, ‘group projects’ create a different level of commitment for those involved.  Each one must play his/her part in order for the project to be deemed successful on presentation day.  An ensemble contest is no different.  The students must work together more diligently than in the larger choir because it will be quite obvious to any adjudicator who has not learned their part or memorized the words or who is not blending with the others.   But beyond that, students with prior music skills (ie. playing piano, leading small singing ensembles) are given the opportunity to lead out in the ensemble rehearsal time.  It’s time for us to give leadership opportunities to our students.

“provide opportunities to serve the community”
The COHC Solo & Ensemble contest is open to the greater OKC Metro community. We provide a musical event that is cost effective for families, private schools, public schools.  This past year we had 125+ student participate and although the majority were our students, we are seeing a growing number of local private studios and public schools participate in this event.  With good direction and a Solo & Ensemble team of parent volunteers, this musical event could reach several hundred students in the years to come.

“proudly represent the home school sector both locally and nationally through musical presentations”
This event puts the COHC on the “local” stage and allows both the homeschool sector and non-homeschool sector to recognize the level of musical excellence within our choral organization.  We can impact then greater OKC Metro by how parent volunteers, Choral directors, and our students organize and carry-out successful Solo &  Ensemble Contests.
